The Finance Jobs No One Talks About

High paying roles beyond investment banking and private equity

The best finance careers are not always the most obvious. While investment banking, private equity and hedge fund roles dominate campus recruiting, they are not the only paths that lead to strong compensation and long-term success.

Some of the best careers in finance are the ones that get the least attention. They offer competitive salaries, better work-life balance, and a faster path to senior responsibility. Fewer people are chasing them, and that is exactly where the opportunity lies.

This week, we break down the high-value roles in finance that fly under the radar and how to find them before everyone else:

  • 🎯 Overlooked roles in finance

  • πŸ’Ό Available internship offers

  • πŸ” How to find them and land the offer

β€” Investor Briefcase Team

Not every top finance career starts on Wall Street. These roles are often less public but come with serious long-term value.

Corporate Finance

These teams handle acquisitions, investments, and long-term growth initiatives within a company. The work includes market research, building financial models, and supporting deal execution. It is one of the few roles that blends investment analysis with operational insight.

Top hiring firms include Guggenheim, Amazon, Meta, Visa, and LVMH

Typical hours range from 45 to 60 per week.

Total compensation usually lands between 150K and 220K, depending on equity and bonus structure.

Investor Relations

This role manages the relationship between a company and the investors. Responsibilities include earnings materials, investor days, and shaping financial messaging to the markets. Investor relations is focused on the client side of the firm and will allow you to create direct relationships with decision-makers at top companies.

Hiring firms include Blackstone, Starwood Capital, Netflix, and KKR

Hours tend to range from 40 to 55 per week.

Compensation is between 130K to 250K, depending on experience and firm size.

Strategic Finance

Strategic finance teams operate inside high-growth companies and work directly with the executive team. Work includes financial forecasting, planning, budgeting, investor reporting, and fundraising support. The role often serves as a stepping stone to CFO or venture roles.

Top hiring firms include Santander, Apollo, Ares, Oaktree, and Sixth Street

Typical workweeks range from 45 to 60 hours.

With equity included, total compensation can land between 160K to 230K.

These careers offer high-impact work without the rigid hierarchy of traditional analyst tracks. Many also come with better exposure to business strategy and more flexibility to grow in different directions over time.

These positions are not always listed on job boards or funneled through university recruiting. Most hires happen through referrals, direct outreach, or well-timed applications. That means finding them requires more initiative but less competition.

Start by identifying companies and teams where these roles exist.

Two weeks ago we launched the Investor Briefcase Internship Platform to help you discover and apply to top-tier internships. Everything is in one platform with hand-picked roles from leading firms we’ve partnered with.

When you are applying for these roles it is worth connecting with those who currently work in corporate development, investor relations, or strategic finance and study how they got there. Reach out with a concise message asking about their career path and the type of candidates their team looks for.

If you are looking for the right way to network and connect with professionals already in the role, here is a great resource for you to use.

In addition to networking, it’s important to tailor your resume for these roles. Highlight experience in financial modeling, budgeting, deal exposure, or working cross-functionally with leadership, even if you are still in university. These teams are small and prefer candidates who can add value immediately.

Fewer people are targeting these paths, which makes it easier to stand out. The key is to show you understand the work and bring the skills that matter most.
